Adaptive class

This week I got to observe the adaptive class. There weren’t many students in the class, roughly 8 all together with 2 aides for the students with more physical impairment. Today we were learning how to throw a football, catch a football, and how to do a ‘hook’ route. The majority of students seemed to grasp the basics of throwing, some showed the difficulty they had with timing when catching, but the teacher was full of encouragement. For a small class he was everywhere, giving praise where and when necessary. As soon as he would do this, you could see how much it meant to the students when he praised their efforts. Even if the students were having problems, he would say it in another way or use simpler terminology, so that they could get a better understanding.

Although the class ran shorter than other Phys Ed classes, I could see how hard these students were working, and it was for them. Some students had physical disabilities, some were behavioral. One thing that stood out while observing was the amount of student to student learning. One student in particular was reinforcing teaching cues, encouraging the others, and helping keep the other students on task. It really was great to see.
