Dodgeball!!!! No……. not the movie!

This week I got to see some indoor activities, due to the rain. It was the first rain of the school year and it kept most of the periods indoors. With this in mind, the teachers decided to keep gym class somewhat equal for everyone and allow all the classes to play dodgeball, and they even brought out the newer balls, that had just been purchased. Upon looking at the old ones, it’s only a matter of time before they’ll need to get more again.

The classes seemed very big due to the smaller size of the gym, but the rules were set out fairly and clearly. The teacher had the same rules for each class that came through, and he expressed the same safety concerns every time.

Some classes were calling for 6th graders vs. 7th graders, and some even wanted boys vs. girls. On this occasion it was granted, and surprisingly the 6th graders were pretty good, they showed so much more enthusiasm, desire, and excitement at the prospect of ‘playing’. There was one instance when some female students wanted to just wear socks in the gym and play dodgeball, they believed it would be “cool”. I thought it was an obvious accident waiting to happen, but to my dismay, the teacher actually allowed on the premise that they “be careful”. Wow! This was a very risky move in my opinion. There were some cautious moments, where for some reason we tend to cover our eyes with the hope that if we can’t see it, it won’t actually happen, in this case that’s just wishful thinking.

Most of the periods got to get a good game of dodgeball out of the rain today; overall all classes were genuinely upset to stop playing due to the bell going off. It was good to see some actual enjoyment in a physical education class, which seemed to involve most of the students, instead of a select few like some classes can tend to be.
